RECALL THAT ON SATURDAY,

DR Congo, winners of the inaugural competition in 2009, beat hosts Rwanda 2-1 in the first quarter-final at a sold-out Amahoro national stadium in Kigali.

Doxa Gikanji put the Leopards into an 11th-minute lead when he picked up the ball 30 yards out before scoring a wonderful lob over the Rwandan goalkeeper. Jean Claude Iranzi was lucky to escape with only a caution for a reckless challenge on Congolese forward Jonathan Bolingi, and it was Iranzi who set up Rwanda's equaliser on 56 minutes.

Iranzi played in Ernest Sugira and the AS Kigali striker fired past DR Congo goalkeeper Ley Matampi for his third goal of the tournament.

SIXTH SENSE: NOVAK DJOKOVIC GETS HIS 6TH AUSTRALIAN OPEN CROWN....via@sportsbywest3

WORLD NUMBER ONE NOVAK DJOKOVIC HAS SUCESSFULLY DEFENDED HIS AUSTRALIAN OPEN CROWN after defeating world number two Andy Murray in three straight sets winning 6-1 7-5 7-6 (7-3).

Novak Djokovic has now won 11 grand slam titles with 6 of them from Australia, and can set his eyes firmly on Roger Federer's grand slam record of 17.  He would have to move past players like Pete Samparas and Rafael Nadal before he can get to Roger Federer.

andy murray has won two grand slam titles, and in both finals, he beat novak djokovic, so one can easily forgive him for hoping despite the rich vein of form that novak djokovic is in and the fact that novak has beaten murray in 9 out of their last 10 meetings before Sunday's final.

The dominant Serb also extended his Grand Slam winning streak to 21 matches, and has not lost a match at the majors since he was defeated by Stan Wawrinka in last year's French Open final.

"I feel like I've been here before," Murray said in his on-court speech.
"First, I'd like to congratulate Novak. Six Australian Opens is an incredible feat and also what he's done in the last year or so has been incredible consistency, so well done to him and all of his team.

Despite facing an early break point in his opening service, Djokovic soon found his rhythm and broke Murray's serve twice to claim the opening set in 30 minutes.

Djokovic served out with an ace to seal the title, and when they met at the net, Murray had two words for his conqueror: "Too good.

It was another big statement from Djokovic against his major rivals after beating Rafael Nadal 6-1 6-2 at Doha and convincingly dismantling Roger Federer in the Melbourne semi-finals, all in this same month January.

BAD STAT FOR ANDY MURRAY

Murray now has the unwanted statistic of becoming only the second man in the post-1968 Open Era to lose five Grand Slam finals at any one major.

Ivan Lendl, Murray's former coach, lost five finals at the US Open in 1982-1984 and 1988-1989, before winning at Flushing Meadows in 1985-1987

The only grand slam Novak is yet to win is the French open, which means he is yet to achieve a career grand slam, while he also has the chance to win a gold medal at the Olympics in brazil this year.

Rafael Nadal is one player who has completed a golden career grand slam.

Roger Federer has completed a career grand slam, but with Olympics silver singles medal.

Andy Murray won the singles Olympics gold medal in 2012.

Looking ahead to Federer, he said: "I've played Roger 44 times, Rafa (Nadal) 45 I think, so it seems like half of my career match-ups were against these two guys and we keep on playing against each other in more or less every big tournament.

"It's always a great challenge to play both of these guys and Roger, I mean, you don't need to spend words about his achievements. What he has done for this sport, he's a great champion, someone I have a lot of respect for and we're going to have a good match."

Federer was twice thwarted by Djokovic at two Grand Slam tournaments last year, losing to his regular foe in the final at Wimbledon and the US Open

Djokovic has won 10 Grand Slam singles titles and has held the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a total of 182 weeks. By winning three Grand Slam titles in 2011, Djokovic became the sixth male player to win three Grand Slams in a calendar year. He repeated this achievement in 2015. MILOS RAONIC

crowd entertainer, Gael  Monfils is  out of the Australian open 2016 losing 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6,   to Milos Raonic.

Raonic is the Most surprising semi final entrant as most people would have picked players like Wawrinka(whom Raonic defeated en route getting to the semi finals) and Nadal ahead of him.

IN 2014, Despite an ankle injury, Raonic reached the third round of the Australian Open  where he lost to Grigor Dimitrov  This injury, however, forced him off the courts for a month. He returned in March to play the BNP Paribas Open where he would beat Andy Murray  to reach the quarterfinals. However, Raonic would end up losing to Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets. At the Miami Masters he reached the quarterfinals for a second consecutive Masters 1000 tournament, where he lost to Rafael Nadal  This run saw him return to the top 10 in the rankings.

Statistically, his serve is one of the strongest on the tour. In 2012, he served more aces per match and won a higher percentage of service games than any other player. Novak Djokovic  has commented that Raonic "has one of the best serves in the world. Very powerful, very precise."

AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2016: WAWRINKA JOINS THE BIG NAME EXITS.....via@sportsbywest

Milas Raonic has progressed to the quarter finals of the Australian open by getting 4th seed Stan Wawrinka out of his way  in a 5 sets thriller winning 6-4 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-3.

Wawrinka is a former Australian open champion, winning it in 2014, and came back from two sets down to win the next two sets, but a  shaky service game from Wawrinka allowed Raonic to open a 4-2 lead in the decider and he sealed victory at the net  and narrowly lost out, joining other big names(like Nadal, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki) who have left the Australian open at the early stages.......

it looks like Raonic has something over the swiss, RECALL THAT Raonic defeated Wawrinka's fellow Swiss  Federer to win this month's Brisbane International and remains unbeaten for the year after sealing victory in three hours 44 minutes.

Wawrinka has been consistent for a while but  was unable to avoid a Grand Slam exit before the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2014 French Open.

"Tough match in general," said Wawrinka. "I wasn't really feeling great, wasn't moving well. I fought as always but I'm surprised I made it five sets.
"I'm disappointed but I tried, I tried."

French 23rd seed Gael Monfils also booked his place in the quarters after a 7-5 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win over Russian Andrey Kuznetsov.

British number one, Andy Murray is also through to the last 8 of the Australian open despite the health scare of his father in law, which he has confessed would have made him to pull out of the Australian open had his health deteriorated.

Murray defeated Benard Tomic in straight sets winning 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4) and he is set to face Spainard David Ferrer in the quarter finals.

"It was a tough match - both of us had our chances in the tie-break," Murray said in his on-court interview. "He misses a few easy balls and that helped at the end.

"He made it pretty tough, but I was able to make a few more balls. It was quite scrappy, there wasn't a period in the match where we were playing at our best. It was a little bit up and down."

AWAY WINS ONLY ON THE SUPER SUNDAY IN THE EPL......via@sportsbywest

Chelsea has completed a league double of wins over arsenal in the 2015/2016 season despite the fact that this is not one of their best seasons............ and Swansea city went to Goddison park to defeat Everton piling more pressure on manager Roberto Martinez...........

Everton vs. Swansea city
            1-2
Swansea are now out of the relegation zone courtesy of a very crucial away victory against Everton, this means Swansea have now won their last two matches in the EPL.

Ghanaian Andre Ayew was influential for the swans, first winning a penalty, after properly reading a poor back pass from John Stones to Howard who was reluctant to come for the ball, and when he did go for the ball, he tripped Ayew and the referee had no choice but to award the spot kick  which Sigurdsson converted in the 17th minute........... Andre Ayew did get the second goal but that was after a jack cork own goal had levelled matters at Goddison park, as Everton pressed on, and got their equalizer via a Gareth Barry flick from a corner kick that jack cork put past his own goalkeeper.

Andre Ayew's match winning goal came in the 34th minute and puts Swansea city four points clear of the bottom three.

Everton had injuries to Besic and Mirallas during the course of the game, and are currently 12th on the EPL log.

arsenal vs. Chelsea
            0-1
DIEGO COSTA got another  Arsenal player red carded in just like he did in the reverse fixture at Stamford bridge, this time around, it was Mertesacker on the receiving end in the 18th minute after bringing down Diego Costa who had been sent through by Willain's pass, and he(mertesacker) was shown a straight red card by the referee.

Diego Costa then added more salt to injury in the 23rd  for arsenal as he swept home to finish from a fine cross by Ivanovic.

The gunners have now failed to score against Chelsea in the last 6 consecutive EPL meetings and it looks like there is no difference, Arsene Wenger's side always find it hard against Chelsea, Jose Mourinho or no Jose Mourinho.

Arsenal sit third after this home loss, as they failed to keep up with Leicester city.   the good news for Arsenal is that star player Alexis Sanchez is back frim injury, and his entrance in the 2nd half seemed to boost Arsenal.

Chelsea are unbeaten since the sack of Jose Mourinho, and all seems to be going their way now. the blues are now 13th position in the EPL log, who knows, they may just gate-crash the top 6 party.

LEICESTER CITY 1ST POSITION WITH 47 POINTS

MANCHESTER CITY 2ND WITH 44 POINTS

ARSENAL 3RD WITH 44 POINTS

TOTTENHAM 4TH WITH 42 POINTS

SATURDAY IN THE EPL ROUND UP......via @sportsbywest3

THE LEAGUE started with a goal fiesta between Norwich city and Liverpool. a thrilling encounter that saw a total of  nine goals scored as the result of the match looked like a penalty shoot out outcome, 5-4, with Steven Naismith scoring on his debut,  Charlie Austin also  scored on his debut to give Southampton a victory at old Trafford, West Brom vs Aston villa was the only match without a goal in match day 23 of the EPL, Leiscester city are top of the league for at least another 24 hours thanks to a 3-0 victory over stoke city............. the late fixture between West ham and Manchester city Saw Aguero rescuing the citizens avoiding losing to West Ham home and away in the EPL this season.

Norwich city vs Liverpool

Roberto Firmino started the goal scoring in this thrilling encounter in the 18th minute,  after some neat set of passes from the Liverpool players, but then, Norwich drew level through Mbokani in the 29th minute, got a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute with new signing from Everton , Steven Naismith, proving to be a instant hit, and while a 2-1 lead is never comfortable in the EPL, Norwich must have thought that they have made it safe by adding a third to make it 3-1 courtesy of a goal from Hoolahan in the 54th minute in the second half.

A  minute later, Liverpool got a lifeline from Jordan Henderson in the 55th minute, and in a league where you never say its over until its over, Liverpool got their third goal of the game with Roberto getting his brace, a draw was not enough for Liverpool, and they pushed on to get a 4-3 lead, their second lead in the match after throwing away the first one, the 4th goal for Liverpool came from James Milner in the 75th minute. Norwich city proved their resilience once again, and got their own 4th goal of the game via Bassong in the 90th minute, and while it will be easy for one to think that that would be the last goal of the game, Adam Lallana scored with the very last kick of the game to make sure the match ended in favour of Liverpool, as they won 4-5 at carrow road.

The celebrations after the game was so wild that it cost Liverpool manager klopp his glasses. This victory sees the reds move up to 7th on the EPL log, and they can be hopeful about naking one of the 4 UCL slots.

Leicester city vs stoke city
The foxes are guaranteed to be top of the EPL for at least another 24 hours as they routed stoke city in a one sided match winning 3-0 with Vardy back amongst the goal scorers once again taking his goals tally in  the EPL to 16 this season.

Drinkwater gave Leicester city the lead just 3 minutes to the first half break while Vardy got the second in the 66th minute with Ulloa completing the rout in the 87th minute.

Vardy ended his drought in the EPL, this drought stretching as far back as December 14th.

Leicester earned a potentially priceless three points ahead of a difficult period where they play Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in consecutive games.

Manchester united vs Southampton

THE  battle of the Dutch coaches went in favor of Koeman with his wise January transfer market window buy CHARLIE AUSTIN grabbing the only goal of the game, giving the saints two consecutive victories at old Trafford.

United slip five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, while Southampton move up to eighth, having claimed three consecutive Premier League wins for the first time this season.

A goalless draw seemed inevitable before Austin's accurate finish thrillingly grabbed the bragging rights for Koeman over his old rival Van Gaal after just eight minutes on the field.

Watford vs Newcastle united

Odion Ighalo scored one goal and set up the other to help Watford move to 10th on the EPL log after some recent disappointing matches, 4 straight EPL LOSSES.

Ighalo now has 14 EPL goals, as Watford defeated Newcastle 2-1, setting up Craig Cathcart for the second goal.

After a poor first period Watford took the lead 44 seconds into the second half. Troy Deeney lofted a through-ball in behind for Ighalo, who hit his seventh goal in seven games at Vicarage Road.

Cathcart soon put the hosts in control with the second goal, thrashing home a loose ball in the penalty area, to put Watford on track for a third win against Newcastle this season in all competitions.

Jamaal Lascelles gave Newcastle a route back into the match with a 71st-minute header, but Watford held on to secure their first ever Premier League double

West ham united vs Manchester city

Valencia scored the fastest goal of the 2015/2016 EPL season giving the hammers a 1-0 lead against the citizens in the first minute of the match, but last season's erunners up in the EPL only needed 8 minutes to respond from the penalty spot via kun aguero.
payet was a particular threat for west ham, and joe hart dealt with his goal bound free kick in the first half.

Payet got things ticking for west ham, swiching flanks, and linking up with the full backs and his team mates properly, and something seemed to happen with him on the ball displaying his skills and tricks.

Valencia struck again early in the second half and it looked like that effort would prove decisive until the Argentina international bagged a close-range leveller with nine minutes remaining - his fifth goal in four league matches.

the equalizer for city was down to the fact that pellegrini brought in Nigerian wonderkid kelechi iheanacho, and his combination with aguero upfront gave the citizens a draw. kelechi iheanacho made some good passes when he came on as a substitute and you can expect him to partner aguero upfront in the citizens next match.

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham hotspur

THIS LONDON DERBY  was full of goals(all scored by tottenham players) as spurs came out victorious winning 1-3 .

Vertoghen scored in the wrong side of the pitch in the 30th minute, but spurs fought on and levelled matters in the 2nd half by harry kane in the 63rd minute, completed the come back, and still had time to add another goal in the 84th and 90th minutes respectively via chadli and Dele Alli.

Dele Alli scored one of the goals of the season to inspire Tottenham to a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace

From the edge of the area, Alli received the ball, flicked it over the head of the onrushing Mile Jedinak, and drilled a volley hard and low past Wayne Hennessey.

with this victory, spurs remain 4th on the EPL LOG, and are 2 points behind arch rival arsenal who have a game in hand against Chelsea on sunday.

Sunderland vs Bournemouth

new signing, Afobe gave Bournemouth the lead in the 13th minute, his second goal in as many matches, but sunderland had van aanholt to draw them level in the 45th minute.

Artur Boruc was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the second period, as Adam Johnson, Jermain Defoe and Billy Jones all tried their luck, but the two teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.

It took until the 33rd minute for Sunderland to muster their first effort on target, with Boruc flinging himself to his left to deny John O'Shea a first Premier League goal since December 2013, and Boruc was in action again in first-half stoppage time to claim Fabio Borini's deflected shot from the edge of the box.

COMING UP ON SUNDAY:
EVERTON VS SWANSEA CITY
