AUSTRALIAN OPEN: GOODBYE HEWITT.......@sportsbywest3

FORMER WORLD NUMBER ONE, LLEYTON HEWITT has retired from the great sports tennis, following his defeat to spainard david ferrer in the second round of the Australian open.   david ferrer won the match in straight sets 6-2 6-4 6-4.


 Hewitt, wearing a shirt decorated with the Australian flag, was joined on court by his three children while his wife Bec, looked on in tears.

He said afterwards,
"I gave everything I had, like always, and left nothing in the locker room and that's something I can always be proud of," Hewitt told the crowd.
"In my whole career I've given 100 per cent and I love coming out here and competing."

  A befitting end to a career at the age of 34 the world would have seen more from him if not for injuries, he is the youngest male player to be ranked number one, achieving this feat aged 20. he won the 2001 us open and 2002 Wimbledon tittles.


MURRAY SWEEPS PAST SAM GROTH.

Andy Murray swept past home favorite Sam Groth in straight sets winning  6-0 6-4 6-1.

It's nice to play different game styles," the world No 2 said on court afterwards. "Sam is different coming to the net a lot, so that's nice, but when he has served well, it's easy to get impatient because you don't touch the ball.
"He didn't serve well at the start of the match, but when he picked up in the second set, it became much tougher."


STAN WAWRINKA AND RAONIC ARE BOTH THROUGH TO THE THIRD ROUND OF THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN.

 Wawrinka defeated Stepanek 6-2 6-3 6-4  while Milos Raonic has also progressed after coming through a hard-fought 7-6 7-6 7-5 win over Tommy Robredo.

The man who sent Nadal out of the Australian open Fernando Verdasco is now out after he was defeated  4-6 6-3 6-3 7-6 by Dudi Sela of Israel.
